How about a little bit of Nirvana or Presidents of the United States of America for your baby? You do want your kids to be cool, don’t you?
Chris Ballew, lead singer of The Presidents of the United States of America, has an alter-ego: Caspar Babypants. Caspar’s goal is to provide music for children and families. His album This is Fun! is scheduled for release November 2. In baby time, that’s a long time, but it’s scary to think that it’s not at all. After all, November 2 is two days after Halloween, and aren’t the stores already full of Halloween merchandise?
If you’re not already familiar with Caspar Babypants, you might be interested in what an expert on musical entertainment says about him. "Caspar Babypants is one of the few children's recording artists I can listen to without wanting to stab myself in the eyes." There you have it from Weird Al Yankovic. While the image is gruesome, many adults can sympathize with the desire after listening to Barney or “It’s a Small World (After All)” repeatedly.
This is Fun! begins with a catchy, country-flavored counting song, “All You Pretty Babies.” Other songs, like the humorous “The Legend of the Bone” tell a convoluted story with a happy ending. Still others observe some of the things that fascinate kids, such as “Look at All These Elephants,” ”The Frogs,” “Dark of Night,” and “Speedy Centipede.” These are songs that were meant to be shared.
Caspar Babypants helps us stretch our imagination with “Googly Eyes,” and reminds us of the good ol’ days with “Shoo Fly,” a song I never expected to hear again anywhere. With a friendly, inviting voice he offers the opportunity to be silly, musical, and young — exactly what kids need to be. The emphasis is on the stories and words, with simple acoustic accompaniment.
